Elvis Costello, Roots set for first Whistler fest

Music event set for July 19-20 in British Columbia

Elvis Costello and the Imposters, the Roots and Broken Social Scene have been tapped for this year's inaugural Whistler Music Festival, set for July 19-20 at Tube Park at Base II on the side of Blackcomb Mountain in Whistler, British Columbia.
Other artists performing at the festival include Robert Randolph & the Family Band, Medeski Martin & Wood, Bedouin Soundclash and Serena Ryder. Additional acts will be announced in the coming weeks. Tickets for the event go on sale Thursday via WhistlerMusicFestival.com. Single-day tickets are priced at about $67.50, and two-day passes cost $120.
"We'll be in an unbelievable setting in the middle of the mountains," Festival Network CEO Tom Shepard said.
The Whistler Music Festival is produced by Festival Network in collaboration with Tourism Whistler, Whistler-Blackcomb and Resort Municipality of Whistler. Festival Network also overseas such jazz/folk-themed festivals as JVC Jazz Festival Miami, Los Angeles' Playboy Jazz Festival and JVC Jazz Festival New York.
The event brings another major concert to the Whistler area; the inaugural Pemberton Festival will be held just north of the town the weekend after Whistler and will feature performances by Coldplay, Jay-Z and Nine Inch Nails, among others.

Bob Dylan : Music Industry Is "Hypocritical"

Bob Dylan has labelled the music industry as "hypocritical rubbish", in a new interview with The Times.

The songwriter told the paper, "The music world's a made-up bunch of hypocritical rubbish. I know that the book people are a whole lot saner."

"And the art world? From the small steps I've taken in it, I'd say, yeah, the people are honest, upfront and deliver what they say."

"Basically, they are who they say they are," added Dylan. "They don't pretend. And having been in the music world most of my life I can tell you it's not that way. Let's just say it's less dignified."

Rock band Yes cancels summer tour after singer falls ill

NEW YORK —

The classic rock band Yes has canceled its 40th anniversary tour following frontman Jon Anderson's severe asthma attack last month.

The 63-year-old singer, who's since been diagnosed with acute respiratory failure, was ordered by doctors last weekend to rest for at least six months "or suffer further health complications," it was announced Wednesday in a statement released by representatives for the band and Live Nation, which was presenting the tour.

That means no hitting the road for Anderson, who was to kick off the band's 26-city summer tour in Quebec on July 12.

"I'd like everyone (to) know how deeply disappointed I am by this turn of events," Anderson said in a statement. "I was looking forward to celebrating our music with the amazing family of Yes fans once again; but as we all know, health must come before anything else."

Bassist Chris Squire, who formed Yes with Anderson in 1968, said Anderson's health was the band's primary concern, though he was "especially regretful of the fact that ... many of our fans and friends have probably laid out nonrefundable airfares and hotels, etc., in order to enjoy the Yes shows this summer."

Ticket refunds, however, will be available.

The tour, called "Close to the Edge and Back," the band's first outing in four years, included concerts in Toronto, Chicago, Detroit, Boston, Miami, Atlanta and Seattle. It was to close in Universal City, Calif., on Aug. 22.

Anderson and Squire were to be joined by guitarist Steve Howe, drummer Alan White and Oliver Wakeman on keyboards. Wakeman's father is former Yes keyboardist Rick Wakeman.

The band, whose hits include "I've Seen All Good People" and "Owner of a Lonely Heart," previously released the album "Magnification" in 2001.

Formed in 1998 as a former position project by longtime Unleashed guitar player Fredrik Lindgren (wHO here goes by the palm of Freddie Eugene for some rationality), Terra Firma is a greco-Roman, up-tempo stoner/doom metal jazz band based in Stockholm, Sweden. Also featuring bassist Nico Moosebeach, drummer Izmo Ledderfejs, and isaac Bashevis Singer Lord Chritus of Count Raven fame, these Scandinavian scene veterans made their debut with an eponymous waiver through the Music Cartel in 1999. Understandably, accomplished and professional given its key players' considerable feel and stock, this was followed by 2001's evenly impressive Harms Way.
